WHS FBLA members participate in annual MOD Lobby Day
Students get up-close-and-personal with legislative process
On Wednesday, February 19, 2014, three Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members, Katie Harrell, Patrick Wolf, and Tymber States, and their adviser, Barb Shanahan, went to the Capitol in Lincoln to volunteer with the March of Dimes Foundation as they held their annual Lobby Day.
For Lobby Day, advocates visit senators in their offices to give them information about the proposed bill the March of Dimes is supporting, and find out their opinion on it. This year, March of Dimes is encouraging state legislators to support LB 452, which “provides Medicaid family planning services to low-income Nebraskans who earn 185 percent or less of the federal poverty level.”
Not only was this a chance for students to get involved, it was also a great learning experience. It taught the students a little more about how the Nebraska legislature passes bills.
Students were also educated on the March of Dimes Foundation. FBLA holds an annual fundraiser for the foundation, so it was good that the students learned a little more about what their money is supporting.
March of Dimes helps infants who are born prematurely or with disabilities. The organization also advocates for the mothers of these children. Their mission: “We help moms have full-term pregnancies and research the problems that threaten the health of babies.”
