WHS FBLA sends 10 to NE Fall Leadership Conference
Sept. 28 event focuses on achieving success in the world of business
Launch the media gallery 1 playerTen Wahoo High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members and their adviser, Barb Shanahan, attended the Nebraska Fall Leadership Conference at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
The motivational speaker for the Opening Session was Nebraska entrepreneur Josh Erickson. His message to the students was that in order to become a leader in the future, you have to be a leader now. He told students to position themselves for leadership possibilities by taking responsibility for things around them both at school and at home.
Erickson gave the students a variety of ways to do this, some as easy as just smiling and having a positive attitude. He also talked about etiquette and how it can affect your leadership opportunities. He talked about such things as when to stand or sit, how to hold your fork when eating, and how to unfold and place your napkin.
After the opening session, the students went to break out sessions. Some of the topics covered were communicating with people you don’t know, communicating through social media, and tips on succeeding in FBLA.
Cameron Quick said he had never heard of an “elevator speech” until today.
“It was good because now I know what it is,” Quick stated.
Quick liked it so well, he volunteered to give his own elevator speech in the break-out session.
Claire Johnston’s take-away from the day was “we are leaders and we do hard things.”
Dylan Caples said he learned “how to communicate with others through actions.”
The students are now looking forward to sharing what they learned with other FBLA members.
