Elementary Students Attend Bullying Conference
4th Graders to Share What They Learned in School Skit
Launch the media gallery 1 player“Kids CAN…Stop Bullying!!” was a one-day bullying prevention leadership conference for 4th grade students held on October 16 in Fremont.
Six students from Wahoo Elementary’s fourth grade classes attended the conference: Emma Hastings, Chaleigh Mattson, Jake Ruzicka, Josie Schnakenberg, Olivier Ellis, and Gage Lamprecht.
The day included icebreakers, activities on building relationships and preventing bullying, skill building for bystanders (kids and adults who see or know about bullying) and a special bullying prevention activity by R.E.S.P.E.C.T.2.
When asked what they learned, the following students commented:
Emma Hastings: “I learned about the five R’s: Respect, Recognize, Refuse, Report, and Responsibilities.”
Chaleigh Mattson: “Respect means to keep things nice. Don’t be mean.”
Jake Ruzicka: “Recognize means to make sure you know who the bystanders are. Bystanders can recognize who the bully is and help the victim.”
Josie Schnakenberg: “I learned that refuse can be to look the bully in the eye.”
Olivier Ellis and Gage Lamprecht: “Always report the bully. This is not tattling--it’s telling.”
The entire group felt that it is a student’s responsibility to help stop bullying. It is important to take a stand against this.
Activities for the day are taken from the exemplary research-based elementary bullying prevention curriculum, Steps to Respect, by Committee for Children. School teams will be asked to complete a responsibility form identifying how they will address bullying in their school or community. Each student will receive an activity book on the topic with ideas for how they can carry the message back to their school that Kids CAN…Stop Bullying!
This excited group plans on sharing their ideas with the elementary by performing a skit during November’s Warrior Awards.
