Wahoo 5th Grade Teacher awarded 2017 VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award
Mrs. Rezac wins local & regional competitions; advances to state
Congratulations to Wahoo Elementary 5th Grade Teacher Verna Rezac: recipient of the 2017 Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award!
The VFW launched this award in 1999 to recognize classroom teachers for promoting citizenship education.
Mrs. Rezac was nominated for the award by her peers, and has won the award at both the local and regional levels! At an awards ceremony yesterday, surrounded by her cheering students, local military personnel presented Rezac with a certificate, plaque and $75 for her impressive ability to instill in her students a firm foundation of understanding of our country, its government, and our rights and responsibilities as citizens.
From here, Rezac advances to a state-wide competition, and hopefully beyond that to nationals. Eventually, three teachers, one from each of three grade levels (K-5, 6-8, 9-12), will be selected as national winners. Each national winner will receive the Past Commander-in-Chief John Smart Award and $1,000, $1,000 for his/her respective school, and an all-expense paid trip to the 2017 VFW National Convention in New Orleans to receive the award.
Congratulations Mrs. Rezac, and good luck at State and Nationals!
