Wahoo Middle School Students Have a "Day On"
Students Honor Martin Luther King Jr. through Community Service
Launch the media gallery 1 playerWahoo Middle School eighth graders had a “Day On” for Martin Luther King’s birthday last Monday, January 21. They learned about life in the time of the Civil Rights Movement and about Dr. King. They also did volunteer community service at several Wahoo locations. The purpose of the day was to show the WMS class how easy it is to donate their time and talents to their community, just like Dr. Martin Luther King dreamed in 1964.
Jason Libal, WMS Principal, stated, “This was a great idea. I hope to do this project again soon. Our students learned a lot while contributing to their community.”
The morning was spent as a large group. The students watched a video titled “And the Children Shall Lead”, which was about how life was for white and African-American teenagers before the Civil Rights Act.
Launch the media gallery 2 playerFinally, the students were sent in small groups to locations around Wahoo to do their volunteer community service, including Saunders House, Care Center, Pet Rescue, Wahoo Elementary, South Haven, Little Nana’s and Bethlehem Lutheran Church. They read to patients, played games with residents, walked dogs, scooped snow, read to kindergartners, cleaned and painted.
“I’d really like to spend time volunteering at Pet Rescue next summer because I really enjoyed that,” said eighth grader Emily Spicka.
