WMS Students Donate over 500 Pounds of School Supplies to Less Fortunate Children in Third-World Nations

This quote, by Willam Arthur Ward, captures the essence of a service project recently completed by the students at Wahoo Middle School. It was brought to the students' attention that many students who live in Third World nations or who are currently displaced and may be living in refugee camps are lacking the basic school supplies needed to learn effectively on a daily basis.
Helen Hansen and Mary McKay, local leaders of the Lutheran World Relief effort to secure and ship school supplies to those such students, called on local students again this year for help.
Last year, the middle school population raised nearly 50 pounds of notebooks, pencils, erasers, construction paper, scissors and crayons for the cause. This year, the opportunity to help others met with amazing results - the students raised over 500 pounds of school supplies and nearly $60 in cash to help pay for shipping the materials overseas!Student chairpersons Jaylee Hinrichs and Haley Jones were busy challenging each grade at the middle school to think of others and bring items for the cause.
"It was a great project and we were surprised at how many school supplies we collected," the two 8th graders reported.
In a celebration ceremony held in the gymnasium, Superintendent Ed Rastovski praised the students' kind gesture in thinking of others who are less fortunate. Wahoo Mayor Jerry Johnson echoed the superintendent and added that this type of effort is representative of the kind of community that Wahoo is. Wahoo school board member Al Grandgenett and WMS Principal Jason Libal reminded the kids that they should be proud of this type of servant leadership, and encouraged them to continue looking for more opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others.
