Buol Boxes His Way to Regionals
WMS Student Has Been Boxing Since Age 7
Wahoo Middle School 7th grader Alfonso Buol isn’t shy when asked why he loves boxing: “It is fun knowing that you can fight and it’s legal.”
Buol quickly added that the sport he has been a part of for the last four years and includes his father, uncles and his brother, teaches him self-discipline and keeps him in top physical shape.
Alfonso is a member of the Fremont Boxing Club, a gym in which he trains three days a week for two hours each day. A typical practice involves a three-mile run, hundreds of sit-ups, jumping rope, hitting the heavy and speed bags and lots of sparring. The 90-lb. fighter has four coaches – Ival, Larry, Brian and Rob – and respects them all very much.
As the young boxer prepares for his next bout, a regional tournament in Des Moines on January 10, Buol knows that he will be facing some tough competition, but, aside from a few butterflies when he enters the ring, Alfonso is very confident and well prepared.
He’ll stretch and warm-up while listening to Nelly’s “Heart of A Champion”. Once he steps inside the ropes, he’ll say a quick prayer, salute the crowd and then take his place in the center of the ring for the pre-fight instructions. When the bell sounds, this dynamic fighter will come out swinging!
Good luck, Alfonso!
