WMS 8th graders honor Martin Luther King, Jr. through community service
Students spend MLK Day carrying out mission of civil rights leader

On January 19, Wahoo Middle School eighth graders spent their morning serving the community, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Wahoo Public Schools celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy by serving others in the community, because that was what King dedicated his life to doing. Many students enjoyed giving back to their community. Separated into groups, the eighth graders traveled to Region V, NAPA, the city library, Saunders County Lost Pets, Cookies and Cream, Happy Hearts Daycare, Mrs. H’s Daycare, the Saunders House, Saunders Medical Center, South Haven, and the Civic Center.
Eighth grader Cali Britton described the day in this way: “A great way to give back to the community.”
Britton spent her morning cleaning at the hospital. Some groups spent their time outside picking up trash, and others served by cleaning inside and helping to organize. Eighth graders who traveled to the pet rescue spent the morning walking dogs and hanging out with the animals.
There were smiles all around from students and business owners. Even the teachers joined in on the fun! With very happy business owners, the day of service was an overall success and a great way to pay tribute to the civil rights leader.
“This is what Martin Luther King would have wanted us to do instead of being out of school,” said Emily Obert, who enjoyed her day at Mrs. H’s Daycare.
After a morning of hard work and fun, Wahoo Middle Schoolers finished their afternoon with regularly scheduled classes.
