Kuester & Foster organize fundraiser for Divis family
Launch the media gallery 1 playerWahoo Middle School 6th grade students Jasmine Kuester and Rachel Foster recently heard about Alex Divis' battle with cancer.
Divis, a student at St. Wenceslaus in Wahoo, continues to battle T-cell lymphoma. The girls knew that the family could use assistance with mounting medical bills.
After drafting a plan to raise funds by selling chances to win donated prizes, the girls set out to make the plans come to life. They enlisted the help of their parents, who donated the prizes. They gained the approval of school officials. They made needed decorations to advertise the event, which was held over the course of one week. Finally, they set up a display table and sold chances to their classmates and teachers each morning before school.
Excitement mounted as the money rolled in and the day for the prize drawing drew near.
That excitement was increased when the Wahoo Middle School Student Council contributed $50 to the cause, and Wahoo Middle School Principal John Harris contributed $50 from funds raised when middle school students sold coffee earlier in the school year.
"This type of service leadership is inspiring," said Harris. "These two young ladies came up with this idea on their own and did a great job making a dream to help someone else come to reality. They had lots of customers each day, which is a testament to the caring nature of our student body."
When the event reached its conclusion, Jasmine and Rachel had raised nearly $300. Way to go Wahoo Middle School!
