Warrior Music students attend annual Cornhusker Marching Band exhibition
2022 "Pride of All Nebraska" includes Wahoo alums Lara Celesky & Avery Spicka
On Friday, August 19, WMS/WHS Band Director Jason Smith and Choir Director Leighton Ware took 35 students to Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Thousands of excited fans traveled to hear the pride of all Nebraska! The Cornhusker Marching Band put on their annual free exhibition for the public. This event is the last day of summer camp for the college band, as they gear up for the upcoming football season.
Not only does the marching band go through their pre-game routine, but they also show the audience the fundamentals of marching. This includes a drill down “elimination” game, in which the whole band has to follow split-second commands in quick succession. If they are caught performing the incorrect task they are out! The last person standing wins immense bragging rights and is hoisted on shoulders.
This year’s winner was a member of the trumpet section!
WHS alumni and current members of the Cornhusker Marching Band: Lara Celesky and Avery Spicka.
WHS alum Lara Celesky was also the 2022 recipient of the Tyler Butterfield Memorial Scholarship. According to the Glenn Korff School of Music website, “this scholarship was formed in memory of Tyler Butterfield, a brother, trumpet player, musician, and friend who passed away on October 26, 2018. Tyler was a beloved member of the KKΨ and UNL band family and is missed dearly. This scholarship is meant to honor bandsmen at UNL who embody the same characteristics as Tyler, including demonstrating dedication, loyalty, supportiveness, and encouragement of others in their time at UNL.”
