WHS student musicians enjoy day of learning in Kearney with Dallas Brass
On Thursday, September 15, WHS Band Director Jason Smith and seven Wahoo High School band students traveled to Kearney High School.
Their day involved watching professional musicians from the group the Dallas Brass. Our student musicians watched them work in open rehearsals with the Kearney High School Wind Ensemble and Choir. They were rehearsing a piece arranged by Dallas Brass trombone player John Wasson.
The students also watched Wasson work with two different Kearney chamber groups as they played pieces arranged by him as well. Mr. Wasson’s accomplishments outside of Dallas Brass include hundreds of published arrangements and compositions, most notably an arrangement of Caravan heard in the final scene of the 2014 Academy Award-winning motion picture “Whiplash.”
Later the students were treated to a small performance and Q&A session by the professional musicians. Then the Wahoo students were able to work on stage with students from all over Nebraska as they rehearsed an arrangement of Star Wars in preparation for the concert that evening.
That night the students and Dallas Brass members played to a packed crowd. Throughout the performance music from classical works, Dixieland, jazz, movie music, rock and roll, and much more were heard in the impressive auditorium. Students and concert goers were literally dancing in the isles as the Dallas Brass brought down the house in their closer.
