WHS Junior Wins Bess Streeter Aldrich Foundation Short Story Contest
Melissa Ford Takes Top Prize in High School Division
WHS Junior Melissa Ford won $50 by capturing first place in the high school division of the Sixth Annual Bess Streeter Aldrich Foundation Short Story Contest.
Ford, along with the winners of the middle school and adult divisions, was honored at a banquet in Elmwood, the birthplace of Bess Streeter Aldrich, on April 18.
The 100 people in attendance listened to the winners read excerpts from their stories and heard Aldrich biographer, Carol Miles Petersen, talk about the Nebraska author.
Ford wrote the winning piece in Mr. Fangman’s English 11 class. Students read Aldrich’s short stories “The Man Who Caught The Weather” and “Another Brought Gifts,” and then wrote a story that captured the “wholesome spirit” of Aldrich’s fiction.
