Five WHS students honored as "Outstanding High School Leaders" & awarded $25,000 renewable scholarships!
Jack Welch once said, "Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about others.”
Pinnacle Bank and Midland University recently announced the winners of the 2022 Pinnacle Bank/Midland University Outstanding High School Leaders Award. The award is presented to Nebraska high school juniors to acknowledge leadership ability and achievement, skills vital to future endeavors, and desired qualities at Pinnacle Bank and Midland University.
Five Wahoo High School juniors were among 52 students in the area selected to receive the award for 2022: Jenna Borrenpohl, David Divis, Zach Fox, Kearsten Peterson, and Landon Spicka.
Each honoree was nominated by WHS staff members. They then completed an application process, which included writing essays, and secured teacher recommendations that supported his or her bid to be named an award winner. A panel of leaders from Midland University, Pinnacle Bank, and the Fremont community then review applications and select recipients based on involvement, leadership roles, and attributes.
“We are honored to be celebrating the Outstanding High School Leader Awards program in partnership with Pinnacle Bank,” said Lori Ethier, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing at Midland University. “While the program has evolved to now include a scholarship to Midland, what hasn’t changed is the commitment made to honor and bring light to the character, leadership, and achievements displayed by standout students in the local community. It is truly amazing to read student applications each year and see the ways that students choose to make a difference for others through leadership and community service.”
Each award winner will receive a renewable $25,000 scholarship to Midland University, which will become a $100,000 educational prize for those students who pursue their education there!
"The students who were selected for this honor are involved in a myriad of school and community programs and are all tremendously successful in the classroom," commented WHS Counselor John Harris. "They are intentional about their investment in themselves. Each is also committed to helping their classmates as well as giving back to their school and their community. I am proud of their accomplishments and I know that there are greater things to come!"
WPS Director Learning Dr. Josh Snyder concurred:
"The Wahoo High School students who have been selected to receive the Midland University/Pinnacle Bank Outstanding High School Leader Award exemplify the qualities of this prestigious award - character, leadership and commitment to community service. As a school district, we do our very best to encourage and support our students in pursuing their interests and post secondary/career aspirations and it is wonderful that they are being recognized for pursuing their passions," Snyder said. "These five students directly reflect the qualities and characteristics of the Outstanding High School Leader Award with their passion for helping others through leadership and community service!"
Students received their awards at a ceremony held in the Kimmel Theatre on the Midland campus on Friday, April 1.
Congratulations, leaders on this well-deserved honor!
