Hamar Competes at Poetry Out Loud Regional
WHS Sophomore Recites 2 Poems at Annual Event
Wahoo High School sophomore Derek Hamar recited two poems at the Joslyn Art Museum's Abbott Lecture Hall in Omaha on Saturday, February 19, as part of the Nebraska Eastern Regional Competition of Poetry Out Loud.
“Derek gave a strong performance,” WHS Language Arts Instructor Larry Fangman said. “The competition has gotten tougher each year. The voting was extremely close. Derek did not qualify for State this year, but I hope he builds on his experience this year so he can make a run at State in 2012.”
Five students from the regional competition moved on to State.
Hamar recited the poems “Light Shining Out of Darkness,” by William Cowper, and “A Hymn to God the Father,” by John Donne.
Hamar competed against students from the following schools: Parkview Christian Academy, Omaha Skutt, Tekamah-Herman, West Point-Beemer, Brownell Talbot, Clearwater, Omaha Integrated Learning Program, Lincoln Southeast, Madison, and Omaha Central.
