Six WHS Students Win "Heroes Among Us" Writing Competition

Wahoo’s winning students were Allie Knowlton (writing about her grandfather), Joelle Anderson (writing about her brother), Jenna Becker (writing about her mom), Leilani Perkins-Dunning (writing about her mom), Lindsey Hartshorn (writing about her mom), and Rachael Meyer (writing about her mom).
The goal of the competition was to help kids distinguish between real heroes and celebrities, to recognize heroes in their family and community, and ultimately to discover the “hero within.”
Each winning student had her essay published in the Heroes Among Us book, published by the Hildegard Center. Each winning writer and the hero written about received a copy of the book.
The Hildegard Center honored the winning writers with a reception on Sunday, April 29 at the Lincoln Southwest High School Auditorium.
All the English 10 students wrote about their heroes as an assignment in Mr. Fangman’s class and had the option to submit their essays to the contest.
