Masek named SENCAP North Region 2018 Student of the Year!
WHS senior recognized for her efforts in the WHS/SCC career academy & dual-credit programs
Launch the media gallery 1 playerJaclyn Masek, a senior at Wahoo High School, was recently named the Southeast Community College (SCC) SENCAP North Region Student of the Year for 2018!
Southeast Community College's SENCAP (Southeast Nebraska Career Academy Partnership), in cooperation with 44 school districts in the state, allows area high school students the opportunity to enroll in SCC and take dual-credit courses in a variety of academies: Agriculture, Business, Construction, Criminal Justice, Education, Health Sciences, Information Technology, and Manufacturing in Energy and Welding. Students also have multiple opportunities to explore their career in a hands-on approach through job shadowing, field trips, professional speakers, and annual events highlighting resumé building, mock interviews, and other worthy career-related activities during their classes.
Masek, who is planning to attend Nebraska Wesleyan University and major in Exercise Science and Athletic Training, began taking SENCAP classes as a junior. She will have completed five SENCAP courses upon high school graduation, giving her a head start on completing college credits prior to enrolling in college. In addition, the experience gained during those classes helped her to narrow in on a career path.
Working as a volunteer at Providence Place, a retirement community in Fremont that specializes in memory care, Jaclyn learned that a career path in health care was for her. SENCAP classes like Basic Nutrition and Interpersonal Relations provided her with a deeper understanding of how to best help the whole patient, enhancing her care and interaction with Providence Place residents.
SENCAP Northern Region Coordinator Joe Sajevic said that Jaclyn is the perfect example of how this partnership is intended to work.
“Jaclyn enrolled in classes that she was interested in. She worked hard to complete the courses, attended the career planning events and always had her work done on time,” Sajevic said.
WHS Counselor John Harris commented that Masek was a conscientious learner and got the most out of her dual-credit opportunities. He noted that, in addition to the SENCAP courses, Masek completed three other dual-credit courses through SCC while at Wahoo High School. Jaclyn will leave high school having completed nearly a full year of college credits. This will allow her to get into her specific college program sooner and complete her undergraduate work in only three years.
