WHS Junior Takes Second Place at Midland Lutheran College Short Story Contest
Callan Takes Award with "Snake Eyes"
WHS Junior Alex Callan placed second place, winning $200, in the Midland Lutheran College Short Story Contest. Callan won for his war story “Snake Eyes.” Sixty students from fifteen different schools entered the contest.
WHS English Instructor Larry Fangman and students Ashley Jordan, Kayla Coffey, David Stuchlik, Jennifer Proctor, Ashley Petersen, Hillary Fick, Melissa Campbell, Emily Widger, Joe Nabity, and Kinsey Clark attended the fiction writing workshop at Midland. Students at the workshop read and discussed a short story by Tobias Wolff and learned techniques they could use to revise their own stories.
Mary Helen Stefaniak, a novelist and professor at Creighton University, conducted the workshop. Stefaniak also judged the short story contest.
