WHS Chosen as One of Five Across State to Compete in Annual Personal Finance Challenge

Launch the media gallery 1 playerFive teams from across Nebraska, one of which was from Wahoo High School, competed in The Nebraska Council on Economic Education’s State Personal Finance Challenge on Saturday, April 30 at Mammel Hall at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. State Treasurer Don Stenberg was present for the competition.
Other teams competing in the state finals were from Johnson-Brock High School (two teams), West Point-Beemer High School and Cedar Rapids High School. The five teams were chosen from an online qualifying round in which 212 teams from 38 schools competed.
The first phase of the competition tested high school students on personal finance concepts, including income, money management, spending, credit, saving and investing. The top five scoring teams then advanced to the state competition, where they were given a scenario of a family with a personal finance dilemma. They prepared a PowerPoint presentation and presented their solution as if they were presenting it to the family; however, they were presenting it to a panel of judges with varying backgrounds in finance.
Launch the media gallery 2 playerAfter the presentations, the judges gave their critique. They had nothing but praises for the five teams. They felt the students did an excellent job with their solutions and presentations. Taking first place was Johnson-Brock, who will now advance to the national competition held in St. Louis.

“I am so proud of the students for making it this far into the competition. It was an invaluable experience for them in preparing and presenting a business presentation in such a professional setting. They did an outstanding job,“ stated WHS Personal Finance Instructor Barb Shanahan.
