Cook Wins Third Place in Bess Streeter Aldrich Short Story Contest

Submission Displays the "Wholesome Spirit" of Famous Nebraska Author

Wahoo High School senior Max Cook has won $25 by taking the third place prize in the 2012 Bess Streeter Aldrich short story contest.

The contest is an annual event sponsored by the Bess Streeter Aldrich Foundation. Stories must be 1,000 to 2,000 words in length, and submissions need to display the “wholesome spirit” displayed by Bess Streeter Aldrich in her works.

Cook wrote his story first semester in Mr. Fangman’s creative writing class. In order for students to understand the “wholesome spirit” Aldrich gave her characters in her fiction, Fangman’s students read two of Aldrich’s short stories: “The Man Who Caught the Weather,” and “Another Brought Gifts.” Students also watched the movie, Cheers For Miss Bishop, which is based on the Aldrich novel, Miss Bishop.
