Warrior Econ Students take FIRST and THIRD of 291 teams in Spring 2023 Stock Market Game!
'Stocking Stuffers' & 'Money Mammoths' produce top-earning portfolios; McKenna Smith wins t-shirt design competition
When it comes to the stock market, Wahoo High School Business Teacher Mrs. Barb Shanahan’s economics students prefer to run with the bulls!
On January 9, numerous WHS students competed in the Spring 2023 Stock Market Game, sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business. The opening bell rang, and 291 teams from across Nebraska rushed to begin an investing journey that will last a lifetime.
“The Stock Market Game program transports students into real-world investing while learning academic concepts that relate to their entire core curriculum,” states the UNL College of Business website. “Students work in teams practicing leadership, organization, negotiation, and cooperation. As they grow their virtual cash account into a top-performing portfolio, they develop strong interests in the daily events that shape our world and barely realize how much math, business, economics, language arts, and social studies they’re learning.”
The team with the most equity on April 7 was crowned the state champion.
THAT team hails from Wahoo! Congratulations to the Stocking Stuffers (Landon Spicka, Audrie Lepore, and Jamie Werth), who captured the spring state championship with a portfolio balance of $126,706, finishing 21.96% above the S&P 500!
The Money Mammoths, another Wahoo team comprised of Nash Beasley, Alex Borchers, Landon Brigham, and Sawyer Lavaley, finished in third place with a portfolio balance of $119,913, 15.17% above the S&P 500!
FIRST AND THIRD PLACE out of almost 300 teams! Wow!
Last Tuesday, May 2, these seven WHS students were honored for their performance in the spring Stock Market Game at the Nebraska Council on Economic Education’s (NCEE) annual Banquet of Champions.
Mrs. Shanahan’s econ classes had 20 teams in the spring competition, each comprised of 3-5 students. The game was offered both semesters, fall and spring, with a total of 619 teams participating.
When combining both fall and spring competitions, The Stocking Stuffers finished in second place and the Money Mammoth’s finished third out of the total 619 teams!
An additional activity of the Stock Market Game is a t-shirt design competition. Students are invited to create and submit a t-shirt design representing the Stock Market Game, using only three colors. The local designs are voted on by the economic students and then submitted to the competition.
This year WHS sophomore McKenna Smith’s design was chosen to be on the 2023 t-shirts! Everyone attending the Banquet of Champions received a t-shirt with Smith’s design. She was also honored at last week’s Banquet of Champions and given a $50 award by the NCEE for her winning design.
The American Institutes for Research (AIR) credits the Stock Market Game for engaging students and improving academic performance, financial knowledge, and saving and investing habits.
Congratulations Warrior econ students on this impressive performance! Your future investment portfolios look bright!
