Wahoo Students Take Top Two Places in Midland Lutheran College Poetry Contest
White & Zeleny Beat Out over 100 Student Entries
Launch the media gallery 1 playerEven though 108 students entered the 2009 Midland Lutheran Poetry Contest, two Wahoo High School students won first and second place in the annual competition. Sophomore Dana Zeleny won the $100 first prize for her poem, “Pickles.”
Pickles

I opened my fridge today
to find a tall jar
of unopened pickles.
They stared intensely down at me
from their high shelf.
Their sweet voices
beckoning me softly,
“Come hither.”
Hands shaking,
I came closer.
Glancing nervously around,
snatching the jar,
I ran to my secret place.
Their tiny voices gushed with
the sound of applause and cheers.
Sophomore Liane White took the $50 second place prize with her poem, “First Memory of My Sister and I.”
First Memory of My Sister and I

Running Through the yard
in the spring.
The sun kisses us lightly on our faces.
The air is beautiful to breathe in.
Can’t get enough of it.
The soft grass
cushions our bare feet
from the uneven hard ground.
The smell of clean laundry drifts
toward us in the light breeze.
We run toward it,
shrieking with joy in the way only little girls can,
darting in and out of the white bed sheets
hanging up neatly on the line.
Midland Lutheran Professor Henry Krusiewicz presented the students with their checks in front of the entire Wahoo High School student body during a homeroom assembly, after which the students read their poems to the audience.
