WHS Junior Eric CurranWahoo High School English teacher Larry Fangman and Wahoo junior Eric Curran spoke at the recent quarterly board meeting of the Nebraska Arts Council held at the Wahoo Public Library.
Curran recited the two poems he recently performed at the Poetry Out Loud State Finals.
Fangman spoke on how he incorporates Poetry Out Loud in the English classroom. He told the council students write a paper about their poem, its author, and students’ line-by-line plan to recite their poem. Students then read the poem in class, memorize the poem, and recite it in front of the class twice before their final presentation in the Little Theater.

Their final recitation is evaluated based upon students’ physical presence, voice and articulation, appropriateness of dramatization, level of difficulty, evidence of understanding, accuracy, and overall performance. The ten top students advance to the school finals, with the winner of the school championship advancing to the state finals.
This is the second year Wahoo High School has participated in Poetry Out Loud. One hundred Wahoo Students participated in the program each year.
