Lorincz Advances to 2012 Poetry Out Loud State Finals
Eleven Finalists Will Vie for an All-Expense-Paid Trip to Washington, D.C.
WHS Junior Sesly Lorincz easily advanced to the Poetry Out Loud State Finals with a strong performance at the Omaha Regional at the Joslyn Art Museum on Saturday, February 18.
Three students from the Omaha Regional advanced to the Nebraska State Finals, which will be held at the Sheldon Museum of Art in Lincoln on March 10 at 1:00 p.m. Nebraska students competed at two other regional competitions at Norfolk and at Kearney to complete the state field.
The winner of the state finals wins $200 and $500 for his/her school to buy poetry books, and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the Poetry Out Loud National Finals on May 13-15. The state runner-up earns $100 and $200 for his/her school to purchase poetry books.
A total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be given at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals, including a $20,000 award for the National Champion.
“First, second, and third place winners are not selected at the regional competition. Only the names of the state qualifiers are announced,” said WHS English Teacher Larry Fangman, who coordinates Poetry Out Loud the Wahoo High School. “Sesly recited two poems at the regional. Now she will learn a third poem because each state qualifier recites two poems, and then the top five after the first two rounds of poems recite a third poem.”
Lorincz will compete against ten other students from around the state, from both large and small schools.
“If she continues to work hard, she has a great shot at a high finish at state,” stated Fangman.
The state finals are open to the public and admission is free.
“We hope the Wahoo community shows up to support Sesly on March 10!” Fangman added.
